The Batu Caves outside Kuala Lumpur awaken your senses.

Russell Roy

One of the most iconic sights in Kuala Lumpur is the Petronas Towers. These buildings were the tallest in the world for eight years. They are still impressive and certainly a must see. If you are looking for an escape from the city, a visit to the Batu Caves is a must.

The Batu Caves are an easy day trip accessible by subway which takes you a couple hundred metres from the cave entrance. The natural cave serves as a home for a number of Hindu Temples dedicated to Lord Murugan and Shrines. Immediately upon leaving the subway, be sure to look over you left shoulder as you are greeted by your first colossal god statue.

A short walk down the roadway brings you to the foot of the cave entrance. A total of 272 rainbow coloured stairs await. The gold statue of Lord Murugan is 140ft tall for perspective. Your visit is free, so simply walk on through the gates.

It is very likely that you will encounter some long-tailed macaques.

At the top of your stair climb you are greeted by another ornate statue at the actual entrance to the cave.

Once inside the main cavern, you may find yourself feeling small as the main cave is massive. It contains a full sized temple and even more stairs to ascend. The upper chamber is open and the sunlight is welcome. You will find another temple, but look around as there are many unique photo opportunities to capture.

Look closely and you may even see some bats as the cave is said to be home to some 21 different species.
