A must see stopover between Hiroshima and Kyoto. We were fortunate to time it right at the height of the cherry blossom season. An already incredibly beautiful structure with stunning highlights.

The Himeji Castle has remained in tact for almost 700 years notwithstanding several rounds of remodeling and renovations. The present version dates back to the early 1600s in the style of Feudal Japan architecture. It has survived earth quakes and WWII bombing and was named the first Japanese UNESCO world heritage site in 1993.

The castle complex is very impressive from the outside and within as much of the structure can be visited including a climb to the top, complete with impressive views of the surrounding city.

The approach to the castle complex builds excitement.

Past the outer walls and gates, the full scale of the complex is revealed. This is also where you join the crowded. Himeji is the most visited castle in Japan, and for good reason.

The tower and the ramparts are both available to visitors. Both involve the customary removal of your footwear and both require a fair amount of walking.

A few photos of what to expect inside.  Some of the stairways are quite narrow and steep as you ascend the tower. The higher you go, the narrower and more congested the stairwells and floor space become.

And the views to the outside overlooking the ramparts and looking back towards the train station. It is worth it to make your way, all the way to the top.

Finishing up with some views of the cherry blossoms highlighting the castle architecture. Yeah, you want to see this and you need these photo memories. An experience you will not soon forget.
