On the edge of the Great Thar Desert, near the Pakistan border lies the fortress town of Jaisalmer. Founded in 1156, the fort city is imposing on the outside and equally impressive within the walls. You first look at the city comes from a distance as it clearly stands out above the surrounding desert plain.
As you approach the town you begin to appreciate the size and scale of the ramparts.
The next view is the gate and corresponding fortress protecting the entrance to the city. Even the gate itself is imposing.
A view from beyond the gate looking back from the fortress along with some typical streets. The narrow alleyways meander and provide ample opportunities to explore. Traffic is light and the place is actually pretty calm by India standards. The carved sandstone homes and temples are amazing.
A view from atop the ramparts. Tracy is in the photo for scale. Spot her if you can.
