There is a lot of lore and colourful stories about Dawson City. It was at the centre of the Yukon gold rush after all. It is idyllically situated at the forks of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers, which is also the centre of a massive gold dredging enterprise that lasted decades. The spoils of the dredges can be seen for many kilometres around the town. The areas left untouched are beautiful indeed.
When you reach the town you are struck by how well preserved the buildings are. The other interesting aspect is that they are still purposed as they have always been. The general store sell hardware, the saloon sells liquor and the hotels are still hotels. You just get a real sense of the old west complete with wooden sidewalks.
Diamond Tooth Gerties is a casino. The oldest in Canada.
One of the more unique Dawson City traditions is the SourToe Cocktail. Yes, it is a real human toe and tradition says that it must touch your lips when you enjoy your drink. The toe is popular having found its way to 60,000 people's lips.
Given its atmosphere, there is no doubt that Dawson City provided key inspirations to some of Canada's most famous authors including Jack London, Robert Service and Pierre Burton. Their homes are now tourist attractions.
