Kingdom of Siam - Ayutthaya Ruins

Once the biggest and wealthiest city in the east, only ruins remain of Siam, having been sacked by the Burmese in 1767. What remains is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though technically ruins, the remnants are still very impressive.

Ayutthaya can be a day trip north of Bangkok, but I would recommend spending at least a couple of days to take in more of this fascinating place.

It was fortunate that many of the grander structures and temples in the city were constructed of brick and mortar so they partially survived the Burmese onslaught. Today the ruins are scattered over a very large area interspersed amongst ponds (which were once reflecting pools and canals) and park areas and modern development.

Here are photos of just some the ruins you can expect to explore when you visit the site.

Nothing like a cold beer with a view after a hot days touring.
