Bada Bagh Cenotaphs India

Russell Roy

The Bada Bagh Cenotaphs were built fairly recently between 1740 and the 1900's which accounts for their excellent condition. The cenotaphs commemorate local rulers, queens and other royal family members. Each is unique, carved from sandstone and beautiful. It really is the detail in the carved sandstone that makes this place so special.

We visited the site late afternoon so the lighting was perfect for some great photos. The Bada Bagh site really stands out from it's stark surroundings. It was once located near a small lake that is now dry, but green nevertheless. You access this desert site by climbing a low hill. Once there, you are free to wonder and explore at will.

For being a relatively small site, there were plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. The craftsmanship and attention to detail was so impressive that you had to keep reminding yourself that everything was carved from solid rock and then seamlessly fit together. For me, the roof details were most impressive.

A view back to the fortress city of Jaisalmer. A very interesting place that deserves a post on its own.
